India's Anaemia Crisis — 57% of Women
India has one of the highest rates of anaemia in the world, and the numbers are getting worse, not better. According to the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5, 2019-21), conducted by India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, a staggering 57% of women aged 15-49 are anaemic. To put that in perspective, the World Health Organization classifies anaemia prevalence above 40% as a "severe public health concern." India exceeds that threshold by a wide margin. The UN's 2025 SOFI report confirmed that approximately 203 million Indian women aged 15-49 suffered from anaemia as of 2023. ## What Exactly Is Anaemia? Anaemia occurs when your blood doesn't carry enough oxygen to your tissues, typically because of low haemoglobin.
