Candle Gazing (त्राटक, Trāṭaka) is a beginner level meditation practice taking 10 minutes. Body parts: eyes, brain. Benefits: Dramatically improves concentration and focus. Strengthens eye muscles and improves vision. Purifies the eyes through natural tears. Develops will power. Calms the anxious mind. Gateway to deeper meditation states. One of the shatkarmas (6 purification techniques). How to do Candle Gazing: Place a lit candle at eye level, 2-3 feet away. Sit comfortably, spine erect. Gaze at the candle flame without blinking. Focus on the tip of the flame. When eyes water, close them gently. Observe the afterimage behind closed eyes. When image fades, open eyes and repeat. Practice 10-15 minutes total. Breathing: Slow, natural breathing throughout. Conditions it helps: concentration, insomnia, eye-strain, anxiety, memory.
