Ocean Breath (उज्जायी)
Ocean Breath (उज्जायी, Ujjāyī) is a beginner level pranayama practice taking 5 minutes. Body parts: lungs, throat, nervous-system. Benefits: Creates a calming ocean-like sound that focuses the mind. Warms the body from inside. Stimulates thyroid through gentle throat contraction. Slows breathing rate — activates parasympathetic system. Builds stamina for longer practices. Regulates blood pressure. How to do Ocean Breath: Sit comfortably or use during yoga practice. Slightly contract the back of the throat (like fogging a mirror). Inhale slowly through nose — you'll hear a soft ocean/Darth Vader sound. Exhale slowly through nose with same throat constriction. Keep the sound even on inhale and exhale. Practice 5-10 minutes or throughout asana practice. Breathing: Equal length inhale and exhale. Smooth, controlled, audible.. Conditions it helps: thyroid, stress, insomnia, concentration, stamina, bp. Contraindications: Severe throat infection, Low blood pressure — practice gently. Tips: The sound should be audible to you but not across the room. Start by fogging a mirror with mouth open, then close mouth.
